Emergency? Stay calm! Follow MedChinaGuide’s verified step-by-step roadmap.
If you’ve been bitten or scratched by a dog or cat in China, you need fast, clear guidance. Language barriers, unfamiliar medical systems, and confusing procedures can make a scary situation worse.
2 NON-NEGOTIABLE RULES
- Treat locally immediately: If exposed abroad, get vaccinated locally FIRST. Do NOT travel to China for treatment—delays risk death.
- PEP has NO contraindications: Everyone (infants, pregnant women, elderly) must get prompt post-exposure prophylaxis. Rabies is 100% fatal but nearly 100% preventable with proper care.
Part 1: Emergency First Aid (Do THIS FIRST)
- Wash: Flush the wound with soapy water + running water for at least 15 minutes.

- Disinfect: Use iodine or 75% medical alcohol.

- Do NOT bandage tightly: Keep the wound open for ventilation.

- Go to a clinic right away with your passport.

Selection Strategy:
- For Ease of Communication & Payment: In Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, prioritize international hospitals marked with “Full English service” or “Direct Billing.”
- For Authority & Cost-Effectiveness: In other cities, go directly to Municipal/CDC clinics, large public hospital ERs, or the public hospitals listed above. This is the most authoritative and efficient route.
- Urgent Query: In any city, try the health hotline
12320or the local CDC for the latest clinic info.
Part 3: Booster Shots Started Abroad
We do NOT recommend traveling to China to finish rabies shots. Hospitals may refuse due to unregistered overseas vaccines.
If you must continue in China:
- Bring official English vaccination records (brand, batch, dates).
- Doctors may use China-approved vaccines to complete the schedule.
- Clearly say: “I need to continue my rabies vaccination started abroad.”
Part 4: Cost, Communication & Insurance
- Key phrase: I need the rabies vaccine, please.
- Cost: Local ¥300–600; Imported ¥1000–1500.
- Insurance: Keep invoices, bills, and records for reimbursement. International hospitals may offer direct billing.
